CASE STUDY – WASTE MANAGEMENT

In 1996, when the city of Monterey, California built a Materials Recovery Facility (MRF) they chose Kalman Floor Company to install a high-quality, long-lasting floor slab. The floor in a MRF receives abuse from tracked vehicles and corrosive waste materials and cannot be repaired while the facility is operating. A Kalman Seamless Concrete® base slab with Kalman Absorption Process® concrete floor topping was selected to meet these challenges.

The Seamless Concrete® base slab eliminated all but two bulkhead joints in this 40,000 square foot building. With fewer joints, the buckets and trash are less likely to get into the crevices and tear up the floor.

Kalman Absorption Process® topping has a large amount of carefully selected coarse aggregate and a cement-rich paste. Poured with a high slump to allow the coarse aggregate to flow into place, the “water-of-workability” is then removed with drying blankets after the concrete is in place. After consolidation and troweling, the result is a concrete floor with the density of quarry tile and a hard, durable finish.

Monterey had planned to replace the floor in this facility every 5 years. After eleven years, the Kalman floor is still going strong. With more than twice the expected life span, this floor truly paid for itself!
